Bernardo Bellotto (1722-1780), known as Canaletto, was the nephew and pupil of the Venetian veduta painter Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697-1768), from which the nickname Canaletto derives. As court painter of August III., the son and successor of August the Strong, he created a series of 14 large-sized views of baroque Dresden between 1747 and 1758.
