03 | BRÜHL'S TERRAcE

Dresden from the left banks of the Elbe above the Augustus bridge, 1748

Dresden from the left banks of the Elbe - on Brühl's terrace, 2008

The view of the »Balcony of Europe« from this angle shows the clear transformation of the image of Dresden from the beginning of the 18th century. The dismantling of the fortifications would create space for the Schlossplatz (Palace Square) and Hofkirche (Royal Court Church), and later for the Theaterplatz (Theatre Square) and Semperoper (Semper Opera). With the further addition of a terrace with open steps, a grand promenade of world class was created.
