»The historical buildings in Dresden typically had roofs made from copper. The colours of its corrosion change from dark brown to grey, then to tones of green and turquoise. As time goes by, sandy tones are created which produce an interesting play of colours with the other gradations. The surface of the sandstone also changes from an often intense light yellowish to a brownish tone, then to a grey until it finally corrodes to black. I long observed this interesting process, which inspired my first attempts to combine this play of colours with the largely familiar shapes and contours of the historical buildings themselves. So I could draw from a rich scheme of colours and shapes which are typical of Dresden.«

The vision of Dresden by the artist is closely linked with its own history. For him, the Frauenkirche is a very intense symbol for the courage and strength of a new beginning after devastating destruction. Time is sensed quite individually and, in everyone's hindsight, no longer preserves, but blurs, the clear outlines of moments. This notion is also an important aspect, an important concept, for the artist during the conception and realisation of his pictures. Indeed, his drawings both demonstrate his close attachment to the city, and pay homage to its beauty.
